HIGH RESOLUTION DIRECT-VIEW LED VIDEO WALL

Video technology is advancing rapidly, and one of the hottest areas to watch is direct-view LED. Typically having been used for outdoor, large scale video like that seen in New York’s Times Square, a direct-view screen is comprised of panels of individual coloured LEDs in a tightly-fit grid. Whereas these LEDs have been relatively large in the past and viewable from a distance, today these panels are being produced at relatively fine resolutions using very small LEDs, can now achieve HD, and higher resolutions for exceptional interior monumental sizes, and closer viewing. This is an exciting step, because it stands to replace projection as a means for cinematic screens. But the most poignant benefit to direct-view LED is its intense colour, brightness and contrast. Unlike projection, or even LCD screens, the image produced by LED panels can power through brighter environments, even daylight, while maintaining good contrast. Each of these pictures features the direct view image as captured in photography.—
This project involved us installing a 23'-foot LED video wall in the lobby of a downtown Vancouver building, and is an ideal demonstration of the power of vivid video used to augment an architecturally impressive space.
